How Does a Night Light Work?



The Basics

• A night light is a small, low-power electric light kept on at night for comfort and safety. They provide enough light to see the outlines of objects in a room, but are dim enough to not disturb your sleep. Night lights are often used to comfort children who are afraid of the dark. They can also be used in hallways and bathrooms to allow people to navigate the house at night.

Simple Night Lights

• The simplest night light is a small plug-in device with a low-watt incandescent bulb and a mechanical switch. The switch works like any wall switch, connected to wires that complete an electrical circuit. It turns the light on and off.

Automatic Night Lights

• Many modern night lights are designed to turn on automatically when it gets dark and turn off automatically when it is light again. They use a detector called a CdS cell. A CdS cell is a type of resistor called a photoresistor. Resistors resist the flow of electricity. Photoresistors differ from other resistors in that they change when light shines on them. When light shines on a CdS cell, it decreases the resistance. The night light has a detector circuit which automatically turns on the light when the resistance reaches a certain level. High resistance means that there is no light shining on the CdS cell, so the night light turns on.

Efficienct Night Lights

• Incandescent light bulbs are very inefficient. Since they work by heating up a wire, most of the electricity they use is turned into heat energy instead of light. Some modern night lights use light emitting diodes, or LEDs instead. In LEDs, electrons are forced to jump a gap between two different materials. When the electrons jump the gap, they release a little bit of energy in the form of a photon of light. LEDs make very little heat, which means they waste very little energy.

• I've owned this led night light for years and wanted to get more. Was so happy to find them at this store.
  
  We use them at home and also keep extras in our suitcases for traveling.
  The Forever Glo emits the perfect amount of bed-side light. Not so much that it will keep you awake, but perfect for getting out of bed in the dark and not stumbling around.

• I bought this because my 2-year-old wakes up every night crying because he thinks he's lost is blank. The intent with this night light lamp was to give him just enough light that he could find it but not so much that it lit up the room very much. I bought the 2-pack and used the other in the hallway outside both kids's rooms. Again, it provides enough light to navigate in the dark but not so much that the Flashing Lamp is even remotely overwhelming.

• I odered these and based on other reviews thought they would be rather dim. But in a dark room these clearly cast shadows across the room. I have the blue. So far they are just what i expected except a little brighter. I have only had them a week so I can not comment on how long they will last. But if they get a little dimmer then great! By the way the average LED last about 7-10 yrs so if they last that long then you got your moneys worth.

• I have a couple of long hallways in my condo and these lights work perfectly at night. They do stay on all the time but the soft light doesn't really stand out during the daytime. I've also noticed that they don't heat up much at all for being plugged in full time, they stay cool to the touch. At night you just get a nice soft blue glow. It's nice to wake up in the middle of the night and not bang around looking for a light switch. On a side note I really like the blue color....kind of gives the hallways a bit of a sci-fi glow. I actually purchased an additional 2-Pack the next day.

• Believe it or not, it makes a difference depending on the use (at least in our house). Either way, we like the softer colors, as opposed to the traditional 'clear' or 'white' light. Much easier on your eyes late at night and in the dark. We have several of these, and will probably buy more. The LED night light is nice, and should extend the life of these units for many years.

• i bought 6 of these and all of them work flawlessly. They're not that bright individually but I've arranged them in such a way that my entire upstairs looks like a darkened IMAX theater. Fabulous appearance and only uses 2 cents of energy per year, but gives off enough light that no other lighting is necessary for basic navigation. Wonderful!!
