How to Use a Magnifying Glass:

• Experiment with several magnifying glasses to determine the strength that best suits your needs. Office supply stores are a good source for finding various types of glasses
• Hold the magnifying glass several inches above the text to be read. Move the glass up and down above the page until the best clarity is achieved
• Carry a small magnifying glass with you anytime you may need to sign a legal contract. Even if you wear glasses, this can help with reading the fine print in a loan agreement or automobile purchase or lease
• Look at lighted magnifying glasses for doing craftwork. The light will illuminate and the glass will magnify small parts
• Purchase full sheet magnifying film if you are having difficulty reading the small print in a book. These come in sizes to match anything from a mass market paperback to a full sized hardback or trade paperback book

Tips & Warnings:

• Magnifying glasses are made of either plastic or glass. Plastic clouds over easier than glass, while glass can be scratched easier

• The light is a little hot for anything in water so take care to use the pen light that shines from above when possible at least until you find what you are looking for.
  
  Also, there is no guard in place to prevent you from cracking a slide by focusing in too far so always pay attention if you're not already familiar with microscopes.

• This bad boy was pretty cheap as far as microscopes go but it lets you see well beyond what you can with the naked eye quite well. Older kids will be able to handle looking through the scope but little ones will have trouble. The best part for that is the camera. The camera takes pictures or video when you hook it up to a computer and the process is simple

• This pocket scope is a cool little item. It looke like a pen and has a pocket clip, but you can open it to a 8x telescope. AND a precision 30x microscope. Works great for undercover spy games, camping, at the game, or in the yard. But wait, it is also a 30x microscope. Look up close at bugs, secret messages, paper money, or fingerprints. And it is unbelievably cheap in price.
  It is durable and made of metal, not some cheap plastic like most you see now days. Would also make a great spy toy or a good gift for a scout.

• The product is a pen shaped "microscope". When you look in one end, it magnifies 8 times, when you look from the other, 30 times. The enhancement is enough for the 4-10 year old to see details and great fun as an introduction to the world of miniature, but not enough for the more demanding viewer, for instance the toy does not have a build-in lightsource, and 30 times enhancement is not enough to really get "in there". It is plenty for viewing leaves, textile fabrics, insect wings, money bills et cet.
  
  I bought it for my 7 yr old, and for the small prize, this is overall a great toy.

• My own thoughts are that the magnifying capabilities are pretty good close up - you can see nice detail on a bug, for example, but it is very difficult to see things in the distance clearly. Also, it would be nice if you could twist the scope closed rather than just push it in - it will just slide right open again if you hold the scope upside down. Finally, I think for kids a thick cord to wear around the neck rather than a pen clip would be more useful.

• All three of my kids love this - 11, 9, and 6. They love the fact they can use it to magnify things in front of them, or can flip it and see things from a distance. They like how compact and light it is, and I think it reminds them a bit of Jack Sparrow's scope in Pirates

• All the scopes for kids I saw were not true magnifying outdoor scopes, but cheap plastic toys. My 4 year old loves Diego and wanted to be able to watch for animals (we have birds and bunnies) in our big yard. This fit the bill and stores easily in his pocket. It has been dropped a few times and holds up well.

• We bought this toy for my cousin, who is six, for Christmas. I wasn't sure how it would work, so I snuck it out of the package to check that it worked and didn't need batteries. It works amazingly well, especially considering the low price! It has a slide-out, adjustable piece that elongates the scope and also adjusts for clarity. I could clearly see the weave in my pants, then turned it around to clearly see my husband's ear from across the house! This is a great gift for any budding scientists! I teach preschool and would even recommend it for the 4-5 yr old crowd.
