About Camera Shutter Release:

• Camera Basics: The two main components that work together on a camera is the aperture and shutter speed. The aperture controls how much light is let into the camera body, hitting the film/sensors, while the shutter speed dictates how long the light lasts
• Shutter Speed: Within the camera body is a mechanism that controls how long the film/sensors are exposed to the light. In low light situations, the shutter is open for longer. In bright light, the shutter opens and closes in a fraction of a second
• Shutter Release Cables: A shutter release cable connects to the camera and allows the photographer to take a photograph without having to touch the camera. In manual, 35 mm cameras, with no electronic controls, a wire with in the cable was pushed out to press down on the shutter release button. In modern cameras with electronic controls, the shutter release cable sends an electrical signal telling the camera to operate the shutter and take the photograph.
• Low Light: In low light situations in which the shutter in the camera remains open for a longer period of time, any movement of the camera during the exposure will result in a fuzzy or blurry photograph. A tripod is employed in low light situations and a shutter release cable is used to further minimize any potential movement of the camera during the exposure
• Other Uses: Portrait photographers will often use a shutter release cable when they take portraits. It is easier for subjects to have a person to connect with when the portrait is being taken than just being asked to sit still, smile and look at the camera. The photographer can easily interact with his subjects, resulting in more natural, relaxed portraits

How to Use Remote Capture on Camera:

• Install the software that comes with your camera. Most cameras built with USB interfaces come with the necessary software. For Canon DSLRs you use EOS Remote Capture, a feature included on the CD packed with the camera. However, if you have a Nikon you may need to purchase Nikon Capture or Capture NX2 separately
• Alternatively, download the software. Breeze Systems offers DSLR Remote Pro for Windows, which is downloadable software to support remote capture on most Canon DSLR cameras. For Nikon cameras, Breeze offers NKRemote, which is also software supporting remote capture. Breeze's products work only on Windows Vista, XP, 2000, ME or 98 SE. Canon Remote Capture X for Canons and Sofortbild (for Nikon cameras) can be used on any Mac running OS X 10.1, 10.2 or newer
• If using the camera's manufacturer's software, install all updates from their website
• Attach the camera to the computer using the USB cable that came with the camera
• Turn on the camera and start the remote capture. While most computers automatically detect the camera's presence and open the relevant remote capture tool for you, open it yourself and begin shooting photos from your computer

• I use it with my d50 and it works to about 30 ft. When I get the shot composed, I press the timer button 2x to get the camera ready to shoot, press the button and step out, or sit down and press the button during group shots. In bulb mode I do the same. Press the timer 3x to get it ready, press to start the shot and step away. Come back and press the button again and it stops the shot.

• It's no surprise that when you stand in front of the camera and push the button, the remote triggers the shutter. There does seem to be some onfusion in reviews, both here and elsewhere, as to the remote's ability to focus the lens before triggering the shutter. This remote is capable of focusing the lens before triggering the shutter.

• If you own a D70 you simply can't be without this IR Remote Control. Because Nikon chose not to include a mechanical cable release option (or an electronic one either), it is difficult to shoot at slow shutter speeds, even on a tripod, without getting camera shake affecting your images. You can use the timer, but that doesn't always work for your shooting situation. With this IR Remote Control, you get the same basic operation as a cable release as well as a bonus that you can put yourself in front of the lens and use the remote to trip the shutter release. Camera Remote Control also works in combination with the self timer. One small concern is that because it's an IR remote, you must point it at the sensor, which is on the front of the camera. This can be awkward standing behind a tripod, but not seriously. I really enjoy using this Nikon Shutter Release.

• The remote works very well with my D80. Indoors or if the camera has nearby objects, the IR beam seems to bounce off and reach from any angle, even directly behind and from at least 10ft away (I didn't have more room). Outside without surrounding objects, I was able to fire it from a side. I think its a great product. Match it with a Joby Gorilla tripod an you get easy to setup and trigger shots at night or in low lights.

• I bought a knock-off when on vacation for my D40 and it never worked very well, so I was skeptical about getting this one, but let me tell you, there's a world of difference! I now own a D90 and recently used this cheap little remote for some product shots and some portraits and the response was instant! I don't know how i made it without this little gem! If you have a compatible Nikon (D40 and D90 for sure because I own them, but check Nikon's website for more) then you owe it to yourself to get this product. Just order it. I promise you'll be glad you did. No more stupid self-timers and no more camera shake on those 30-second night exposures. I promise you'll fall in love

• Based on information that I read on the Nikon website, and the price for this remote control, it's a knock-off (not manufactured by Nikon). It works fairly well.
