Instructions
- Determine the processor type and socket number for your computer. Unplug your computer and open the case. Touch a piece of the metal chassis to dissipate any static electricity. Your processor type and socket number should be clearly labeled next to the socket on the motherboard
- Purchase a heat sink and fan based on the socket number from any electronics supply store or computer parts retailer. There are many brands and sizes of heat sinks and fans. Look for products containing aluminum and copper, which are the most efficient materials for transferring heat away from your CPU
- Follow the instructions for installation. Most heat sinks can be installed with a few small Phillips screws, and others clip in. If your new heat sink comes with a fan, the instructions will direct you to the proper connection for powering and controlling it
