How Does a Digital Scale Work?

Basics

Digital scales work with the use of a strain gauge load cell. Whereas analog scales use springs to indicate the weight of an object, digital scales convert the force of a weight to an electric signal. Its key components consist of a strain gauge, a device used to measure the strain of an object, and load cell sensor, an electronic device used to convert a force into an electrical signal. A load cell is also known as a force transducer.

Bending the Load Cell

When an item is placed on the scale, the weight is first evenly distributed. Under the flat tray of a digital scale you might find, for example, four slightly raised pegs in the corners that serve to distribute the force of the weight evenly. The mechanical design of the digital scale then applies the force of the weight to one end of a load cell. As the weight is applied, that end of the load cell bends downwards.

Deforming the Strain Gauge

The force of a weight then deforms the strain gauge. The strain gauge can consist of metal tracks, or foil, bonded to a printed circuit board or other backing. When the metal foil is strained, the backing flexes or stretches.

Conversion to Electric Signal

The strain gauge then converts the deformation to an electrical signal. Because the load cell has an electric charge, as it moves downwards, the electrical resistance changes. The resulting small change in resistance becomes an electrical signal. The signal is run through an analog to digital converter, and then passes through a microchip that "translates" the data. As a result of this final calculation, numbers indicating the weight of the object appear on the LCD display of the digital scale.

• No one really loves their scale. But if you have to have one, and you have to use it. This is the one. I needed to have a scale that does ounces and needed the numbers to be large enough for me to see. The digits are big and bold. The body is sturdy. I must say I really like my scale, no I do not love it just because it is a scale, but I sure do like it. The price was great and well worth it. So if you have to have a relationship with a scale, this is the scale to have it with. One other thing is it is so very nice looking.I really love the look of it.It is also thin enough to slide away.

• This scale is attractive, inexpensive and performs as described. This was Consumer Reports top pick for digital scales about a year ago. Very consistent in measurement. Simple weight only - stand on it, wait for numbers to blink, and read the number. None of that body fat measurement stuff which doesn't work anyway.

• This is a good looking Electronic Bathroom Scale as scales go. It is highly accurate and takes less than a minute to set up. Once you pull out the plastic tab from the battery door, step on it and go... It will automatically shut itself off after 10 seconds once you're off the scale. The users guide was not needed -- though the BMI table was useful to me.

• I just love how the Best Bathroom Scale looks itself. It is great quality at an affordable price. When I placed the order I was skeptical at first since my other online purchases never met up to what they promised. This, however turned out better than I had hoped. I definitely love it so far :) Gives a very accurate measurement and hope to see that it continues to do so.

• I love the design of this scale, it seems to fit perfectly in my bathroom. It's readout has been consistently accurate (no fluctuations of any kind). I would recomend this unit to just about anyone. It's been my favorite so far.

• I've had this scale for over 4 years. It has moved with me three times. It looks great, and the glass design makes your bathroom look bigger because you can see through to the floor. It is a fabulous scale and very consistent. I don't notice any of the problems listed in the negative reviews and plan to buy one for my parents. I have noticed that it takes 1-2 extra tries when it's cold (below 50 degrees). My battery still works great after 4 years, and I use the scale 3-4 times a day. I love this Digital Bathroom Scale.

• I got this Digital Bathroom Scale just for the "upscale" look. It's sleek metal with glass. They state that the lithium battery lasts a long time, so we'll see. It does take four rotations of the `zeros' to fly by before your weight is shown (to the half pound). It looks great and it's cheap. It's thick glass, so if your weight shows more than you expected, you can toss this sucker across the room and it won't break!
