How to Make a Crib Bedding Set?
Crib bedding is an important part of welcoming a new baby home, and often kept as a heirloom for years to come. Purchasing custom made crib sets or even high quality ones can run into hundreds of dollars. To create both a less expensive way to dress your baby's bed and have a lasting memory of this time, sew a keepsake crib bedding set yourself. The methods for this type of project require simple sewing skills, and with your choice of materials available at any fabric store, you can create a memorable piece of your baby's history and keep them warm and snuggly at the same time.
Fitted Sheet
- Fold the fabric in half lengthwise so the selvages are together. It doesn't matter if you fold right sides together in this case. Pin the fabric. You will next cut away a square in the top and bottom corners. Use the 9-inch paper or cardboard square and trace it with the fabric pen, or, use the yard stick and fabric pen to mark a 9-inch square, using the outer sides as the outer edges of the square. Place a pin in the center of the square holding the two sides together. Cut the two lines you have marked on the fabric and remove the squares. Unfold the fabric.
- Pin the inside edges of the squares cut out space together. This makes the corner of your sheet. Sew a 1/4 inch seam allowance on the corner, and use a zig zag stitch to go over it again for strength. Do all four corners. You can now see you have what looks like a fitted sheet.
- Fold a 1/4 inch seam allowance over the entire outside edge and pin. Sew a zig zag stitch on this seam allowance around the entire sheet.
- Pin the center of the elastic to one corner, then stretching it slightly sew it in place on this corner. Using your hands to guide them together, stretch the elastic gently and sew in a zigzag stitch to attach it to the seam allowance all the way around the sheet. Don't over stretch the elastic, you should have enough to fit the entire sheet and when open will pull the bottom of the sheet in to fit the crib mattress. Trim away any excess threads.
Bumper pads
- Lay your bumper fabric together right sides facing. Pin loosely. Using your yard stick mark a 10-inch piece from the selvage. Make another line 10 inches inside of that, and one more after that. This gives you 3 panels 10 inches in width. Cut your batting to match in 10-inch wide panels.
- Pin together the outer fabric, batting, and inner fabric, with the batting sandwiched between the fabric pieces, right sides facing out. Align all edges, trimming to make them completely straight if necessary. Stitch vertical lines on the bumper pads to make the pillows. Measure 25 1/2 inches in from an end for the first line, the second the same distance, the third line measures 27 1/2 inches from the last, then two more 25 1/2 inch lines, the final vertical line is 27 1/2 inches from the last.
- Open the fold of the binding tape, and lay it along the edge of the bumper pad, right sides facing. Pin in place, then sew to the fabric. Make sure all four layers are lined up and sew in place in the crease. Do this to both edges of the bumper pad.
- Cut 2 30 inch pieces of the remaining bias tape and sew on the ends of the bumper pads in the same manner, leaving 10 inches hanging over on each side for ties. Sew the tape together that hangs over to close it and make a tie.
- Cut 10 more pieces of bias tape 18 inches in length. Making sure they are closed edge stitch them together down the open edge. Fold in half and pin a tie to the bumper at each vertical line you sewed at both the top and bottom. Sew the tie to the bumper using a number 1 or very close stitch.
Crib Blanket
- Lay the two pieces of blanket fabric together. Using the yard stick make sure the edges are straight, trim if necessary.
- Separate the pieces of fabric, fold over a 1/4 inch seam allowance on all sides of both pieces, and sew with a hemming stitch. Now place the batting between the fabric pieces, right sides out. The batting will be slightly smaller than the fabric. Pin all four sides together. If you wish you can add a satin blanket binding to the outer edge at this time by pinning it in place over the edge, or leave the edge plain.
- Sew the outer edge of the blanket using a zig zag stitch, keeping your line as straight as possible. Trim any excess threads
