How to Fill a Hot Water Bottle

Hot water bottles have been used for centuries to warm beds. The earliest hot water bottles were metal containers filled with hot coals. Now they are made of thick rubber and filled with water. It can be tricky to fill a hot water bottle without accidental spills or burns. Here is the proper method

• Check the hot water bottle for any damage, such as splits or holes. Fill the hot water bottle with cold water and gently squeeze. This will indicate any small leaks in the bottle. If the bottle is damaged in any way, do not use it.
• Wrap the hot water bottle in a towel to prevent burns when filling. Unplug the stopper and empty any existing water.
• Run your hot tap water until it reaches its hottest temperature, generally after one to two minutes. Alternatively, you can heat the water on the stove, but don't use boiling water or you risk burns and damaging the rubber container.
• Fill the hot water bottle until it is three quarters the way full. This will prevent the bottle from bursting if you accidentally lay on it.
• Firmly secure the lid and hold the bottle upside down to check for leaks. Wrap the hot water bottle with a fresh, dry towel before using.

Tips & Warnings

• Use a funnel to direct the water into the hot water bottle and avoid splashing.
• Children and the elderly should not sleep with the hot water bottle in the bed. Place the bottle in the bed for five to 10 minutes, and then remove. This should allow ample time to warm the bed.

• I am thrilled with this water bottle, especially when you factor in the price. Yes, I know they are now making "fashion" hot water bottles, for over double the price, but REALLY!!! If you want fashion, then get a cute cover. You don't hold a "naked" cheap hot water bottle. You are going to wrap it in something or get a cover for it. Even for my toes I use a cover. Splurge on the cover, but don't waste your money on the bottle. For what it is, this is a functional item at a truly fantastic price and I definitely recommend it.

• Who knew it could be so hard to find a basic hot water bottle at a drug store? But it is! So I was happy to find these online.
  I knitted several "cozies" for these for holiday gifts, it holds the heat in nicely and it just makes it more enjoyable to curl up with something soft and pretty rather than the plain hot water bottle.
  The price on these is fabulous, and you get the best value if you order several and save on shipping. Shipping from this seller, by the way, is nice and speedy!

• It's a HOT water bottle - why anyone would want to put ice in it...??!! I purchased it because it was 100% rubber (natural, sustainable, etc...) rather than plastic (phthalates). Yes, it smells like rubber, but it diminishes with use. No leaks. Shipping was fast.

• What truly amazed me was how long it retains heat. I put nearly boiling water in it at night, wrap it in a thin towel - place it in the bed (under the covers) near my feet, and in the morning, it's still warm (not hot, but warm). We're talking 6-8 hours of heat. I do have a foam mattress, so it may be the combo of the two.
