How to Buy a GPS for a Car:

• Select a screen size: Most car GPS systems come with one of two screen sizes: 3.5 inch (approximately 2.8 inches wide by 2.1 inches high) and 4.3 inch (approximately 3.8 inches wide by 2.25 inches high). The larger screen is also sometimes referred to as a widescreen model. In general, the smaller screens will cost less; however, they can sometimes be difficult to see while driving, depending upon where the unit is mounted.
• Evaluate TTS: Text-to-speech, or TTS, means that the GPS will provide spoken street names. For instance, instead of saying "turn right in 50 feet," it will say "turn right on Main Street." If you do mostly highway driving where turns are few and far between, you might not need TTS. But for urban or even suburban driving, the accuracy limitations inherent to all GPS systems makes TTS a must-have.
• Choose map requirements: Different GPS models come loaded with different map sets. In order to choose a model that works for you driving habits, you'll need to decide between US-only, US + Canada, all of North America, etc. Some models will allow you to upgrade your map set for a fee if you need to travel to other places.
• Decide on traffic updates: If you live and drive in an urban area, live traffic updates can be very convenient. Some GPS units include the cost of traffic reports within the initial purchase price, while others require a subscription service with an additional monthly fee. If you are interested in receiving traffic updates, make sure that the areas within which you'll be driving are included.
• Consider extras: There are many "extra" features available with most GPS units - while not contributing to the actual navigational capabilities of the unit, some of the extras are very handy. For instance, Bluetooth compatibility on your GPS for hands-free cell phone usage can eliminate an electronics item from your car. The ability to play MP3s can also help to deciliter your dashboard area.
• Test-drive several models: Each brand of GPS has a different feel, so it's a good idea to borrow different models from friends, neighbors, or co-workers before you commit. You might find that one interface suits you better or you prefer one set of maps over the other. If you can't borrow one, then try to purchase one from a retailer with a good return policy. If you find the interface clumsy or the map quality poor, you can always exchange it for a different model.

• Have had a Car GPS Navigator for a number of years. But have always had to pay for a new map every other year. Now I get updates and the traffic feature is very good. Garmin rerouted me me from traffic. When I got on the other road looked back could see lots of cars backed up and not moving. This one also has a larger screen. Very good price too.

• It's been only a few weeks since I got it and haven't used it as much. That said, I did use it a couple of times and has worked fantastically, I especially love the traffic function, on one occasion it saved me at least an hour (for a tipically hour drive) by making me drive through an alternative route as the highway was jammed. The on line map update is awesome too as I no longer have to plug it to the computer to get the latest maps.

• This GPS is a good buy for the money. It doesn't have all of the features that the other GPS devices have, but it's good to get you from point A to B.

• On time shipping. Item as described in good, working condition. Should have updated maps before taking 14 hour trip (got lost because of newer road). Otherwise, no issues or concerns. Would purchase from seller again.

• I bought this unit to replace my 1-1/2 yr old TomTom XL 340 S which on the slightest cloudy day and even daytime would loose signal and then have to wait which is very annoying. I have taken the same trips south with this Garmin and has not failed with holding satellite signal. All the bells and whistles are very nice and can change screens easily to review data other than road map.It has a full Lifetime Map & Traffic Updates.

• Works right out of the box. I have not used the Map update yet, and I think the Traffic thing worked, but I am not sure, since I was detoured without any noticible traffic. No need for a separate plug into the wall.You can charge it directly on your computer. Overall, it is a good GPS.

• The lifetime update is what sold me. On vacation in Orlando, FL my sister had to use her iphone to get directions to a restaurant because her GPS map was out of date. I would recommend not installing the Garmin software but instead install updates via their web page. Web page offers more options. Note: I only plan on updating my map once a year or before a trip. One quirk with mine is if it loses external power while navigating it will shutdown instead of staying on battery power. The fix is to start it up on battery power. Battery life is approx 2 hours.
