Air purifiers have become big business. The air inside a home can be dirtier than the air outside due to the contaminants, including mold and dust. Although air purifiers serve to take inside air and make it cleaner, there are concerns about certain types of air purifiers being more harmful than beneficial. Whether beneficial or not, each type of air purifier operates mechanically through different methods.
The original and most low-tech style of air purifiers are filters, which take clean air and pass it through a grill-like filter. These filters are usually utilized with heating or cooling systems. Their job is to remove contaminants as well as dust. They usually consist of cotton, foam, synthetic fibers and fiberglass. They are designed with small gaps so only air is allowed to pass through, rather than any materials within the air. The downside to air filters is that they constantly have to be replaced and cause a slight drop in the efficiency of airflow throughout the home or office.
Ionizing purifiers use a technique known as corona discharge, which creates ions. The small discharge consists of an electrical field. When molecules pass through the electrical field, they pick up an electron, creating a negative charge. The idea is that larger objects within the air, such as dust or allergens, are targets since they are more likely to be ionized. Metal plates, one positive and one negative, located within the purifier do the rest of the work. They serve to draw in these ionized molecules, clumping them together.
Another common type of filter is the ozone generator, which is similar to an ionizing filter; however, it alters molecules of oxygen, making them into ozone, which consists of three oxygen atoms. When oxygen atoms in the air enter a corona discharge, some of them split. These split atoms will either recombine or form ozone. The manufacturers claim that ozone generators disinfect the air by creating ozone, but there is skepticism surrounding the topic. Ozone is known to react with a variety of chemicals, potentially forming dangerous compounds
