How Thick Should a Mattress Be for a Baby Bassinet?

• Thickness: Bassinet mattresses typically run between an inch and two inches in thickness. You also need to determine the fabric of your mattress. Your bassinet mattress should be constructed of a flame resistant material like high-density foam with internal fire barriers. This foam should be no wider than 2 inches to ensure the proper safety and support for your baby. Some mattresses include an innerspring design that allows for support of your baby, with added comfort to cushion your baby. How to Pick out a Baby Mattress?

• Decide whether to buy an innerspring or foam mattress. Innerspring mattresses are made of steel coils, while their foam counterparts are comprised of polyurethane. Foam mattresses tend to be less expensive, as they are made of less material than innerspring mattresses. Innerspring mattresses are more expensive because of the steel content in the coils

• Examine the quality of the mattress. A quality foam mattress will be firm. A soft foam mattress indicates poor, thin polyurethane foam. Babies Online explains that innerspring mattresses should contain 150 coils. If you choose one with more, the coils are thinner, leading to the possibility of future breakage
• Opt for a mattress cover made of nylon. According to Babies Online, baby mattresses are covered in vinyl to help protect against fluid damage, but the vinyl does not protect the mattress from bodily force and tears. Plus, a nylon mattress cover can help protect the mattress from dust mites

• Ensure that the mattress fits the crib properly. Babies Online reports that the standard baby mattress size is 51 5/8 inches by 27 1/4 inches. To test the fit, try sticking your fingers between the mattress and the crib. According to the New Parents Guide, you should not be able to stick two fingers in between the mattress and crib. Opt for the recommended mattress for your particular crib, or try placing a mattress on the display before purchasing

• THe baby cot mattress is great! Truly enjoying downsizing in order to have a second nursery. The only issue I had was that Amazon sent us someone else's order making ours late and we are part of fan here. They sent our order out again but when it arrived it was NOT packaged well at all. The tape was coming off and they threw the plastic protective wrap on top of the boxes versus around them, making it useless.

• this is a pretty firm baby cot mattress and my baby seems to like it cuz he finally sleeps through the night (at 5 1/2 months) so I'm thinking maybe he just didn't like the porta crib mattress that much. Either way it's a great mattress- firm but comfortable at the same time and comes with a 30 yr warranty.

• I like this baby crib mattress. It's not too hard and not too soft which is perfect for my formerly co-sleeping baby who was used to my bed that's about the same.
  
  The only complaint I have is that it doesn't fit the crib PERFECTLY. There's a small gap in there. Also one end of the mattress was kinda dented downwards.

• This is a pretty sturdy baby cot mattress for a good price on Amazon. I don't see why you would need anything more expensive. It's firm and fits our Baby Italia crib snugly. Baby doesn't arrive for a few more weeks, so I can speak to how well he likes it. But, we like the water proof cover, so we don't need to put a mattress pad on top of it and under the sheet. The springs/bolts on our crib's mattress platform do snag on the mattress and we've already put a few very small tears into the mattress though.

• I like this baby cot mattress. It has done well for us. Our baby girl was sleeping in bed with us and I was afraid that she wouldn't like the switch to her own bed but she did better that I could've imagined and I feel that it had a little to do with the quality of this mattress, that is was similar to our bed and helped the transfer go well.

• I got this baby cot mattress for my four month old baby who grew out of his basinet. He loves to sleep with his arms and legs spread out so the crib was perfect except we needed a good firm mattress. And the Sealy was just that.

• Based on the description and the count I was expecting the mattress to be more firm than it is. But overall it's a good baby cot mattress. It's certainly not soft. Our son has been sleeping on it for the past 4 months and he seems to sleep well. I did notice that there was an indentation where his head always laid, but we switched sides and the indentation seemed to go away, so that seems to be a non-issue. The waterproof material is nice, but it makes the sheets slide, so we put a waterproof mattress pad under the fitted sheet.
