How to Choose a Crib Mattress:
A firm, quality crib mattress can help your baby get better sleep and even help prevent breathing problems or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Most standard crib mattress measure 27 inches wide by 52 inches long, and about 6 inches thick. You may want to pick out a mattress at the same time you pick out a crib. If you think your crib might be an unusual size, make sure to measure the crib before choosing a mattress.
- Decide how much you can spend on a crib mattress, if needed. Higher-quality mattresses generally cost more, but the extra safety, comfort and durability can be well worth the price. However, you can still find quality crib mattresses without buying top of the line. As a rule of thumb, buy the best crib mattress you can afford.
- Choose between a foam mattress and an innerspring mattress. Foam mattresses are often less expensive and weigh less, which can make them easier to lift while changing the sheets, while innerspring crib mattresses are more similar to most adult mattresses.
- Pick a foam mattress, if desired, that is firm. The higher the density of the foam, the firmer (and heavier) it will be. Some foam mattresses are double-sided, with a firmer infant side and a softer toddler side, so you can flip the mattress over as the baby grows.
- Select an innerspring mattress, if desired, that is firm and has a layer of foam or cushioning material on top of the coils. Like adult mattresses, the number and quality of the coils determine the quality of the crib mattress.
- Look for a mattress with a quality cover that won't easily tear. Many crib mattresses come with a built-in waterproof layer to help protect the mattress from wetness and spills.
- Make sure the mattress fits snugly in the crib. If you can fit more than two fingers' width on any side, the gaps are too large and the mattress could be a safety hazard for the baby.
Tips & Warnings:
- If you are considering getting a crib in a non-standard size or shape, such as a portable or mini crib, or a round crib, make sure you can find an appropriate mattress to go with it before you buy it.
- Make sure you can find appropriately sized bedding for the crib mattress, such as a mattress pad and fitted sheet. The bedding should fit the mattress as snugly as possible, to prevent it from becoming a suffocation hazard.
- Always put infants to sleep on their backs on a firm mattress, with no soft bedding, unless otherwise directed by your baby's doctor. Follow all safety guidelines for setting up the crib and mattress, and putting the baby to sleep safely.
