Cleaning Methods for Organic Cotton Cloth Diapers

- Storage Methods
Cleaning single diapers as you change the baby isn't practical so you will need some type of storage system to hold the diapers until you are ready to wash them. One method is to place the diapers in a pail and sprinkle baking powder or cornstarch into the pail occasionally to control odors. Another method is similar except the pail is filled half full of water to soak the diapers until they are washed. Keeping the organic cotton diapers in a pail of water eliminates the need to pre-soak the diapers but a pail of water is a drowning hazard for infants and young children, so it must be covered at all times. Whichever method you choose, empty solid waste from the diapers into the toilet before storing them to help reduce odor and make cleaning easier.
- Pre-Soak Method
If you store dirty diapers in a dry container, pre-soaking can help remove stains and discoloration. Soak the diapers in your washing machine by filling it with cold water and baking soda. Stop the cycle or leave the lid of the washing machine open to allow the diapers to soak overnight. Drain the water the next morning and wash the diapers in hot water with laundry detergent.
- Quick Wash Method
Pre-wash your organic cotton cloth diapers in cold water first. Diaper Jungle recommends using approximately one-quarter of the laundry detergent you would normally use for a similar-size load of clothing, washing no more than two dozen diapers at a time to reduce piling on the cotton cloth. When the cold wash and rinse cycle is finished, wash the diapers again in hot water. You can add some baking soda along with the laundry detergent if you are concerned about lingering odors.
- Drying Methods
Dry your clean organic cotton cloth diapers in your dryer or hang them outside on a clothesline to dry in the sun. While both of these methods will dry your diapers, line drying may result in stiff diapers, which can be uncomfortable on a baby's soft skin. If your cloth diapers feel stiff or rough after line drying, place them in a clothes dryer for five to 10 minutes to soften and fluff them.
