How Do Magnesium Fire Starters Work?

Typically, magnesium fire starters are sold in a small, light block of solid material with an iron "striker" tube on one side. Shaving small flakes off one side of the fire starter increases the surface area of the magnesium which is critical to starting the chemical reaction necessary for producing a fire.

Striking a Spark

• The iron cylinder is scraped with another metal (preferably steel or iron) implement to produce a spark. The sparks are hot and start a chain reaction in the magnesium flakes

Rapid Oxidization

• Because the surface area of the magnesium is increased when it is flaked, it is susceptible to rapid oxidization if heat is introduced. When a spark touches a thin flake, the magnesium uses the heat from the spark to start an "endothermic" reaction which causes the magnesium to bond with oxygen to produce magnesium oxide, water (steam), a lot of heat and bright white light resulting in a fire

• This product works great; I have used it many times to start campfires in the wilderness. Regardless of conditions, this will never let you down, even if submerged in water, just dry it off, and it works. The only downfall is that you will need to scrape off a lot of magnesium for it to do any good. So, if you don't have a lot of time to spend scraping, you're better off with waterproof matches. But keep this in your pack just in case.

• After you remove the coating, it's pretty easy to use, just shave some magnesium off and strike! Simple and Easy to use.

• This is a great, very inexpensive, extremely light weight, tried and true fire starting tool for emergencies. I have about five of them in total taking up permanent residence in my parka, hiking Backpack, emergency kits, and gun bag. This way I never forget to take one with me.

• This is one of the best fire starters you can carry. Shaving the magnesium then scraping the metal match insert with your knife will certainly work, but it will also dull your knife in short order. It is a much better idea to attach a piece of a hacksaw blade to it for this purpose. It works as well and lets you save your knife for its intended purpose - cutting. Even if you have no or hacksaw blade (or knife), a sharp piece of broken glass will let you shower sparks from the insert.

• At first use, it will take some scraping to clear the black oxidation. Once you're through the oxide layer, firm pressure and a quick wrist will generate lots of very bright sparks.

• I tried this magnesium fire starting tool. It works perfectly fine as described and were able to light up fine fibers (cotton, moss, dried grass) and paper without a problem.
