How to Use a Wooden Massager

A wooden massager is low-tech but it can be an effective tool if used correctly. Use one for either powerful self-massage or for focused pressure massage on a partner. Using one or several tools, you can apply greater pressure using less effort, increase the strength of gliding and pressing strokes, and possibly do a few moves that your hands can't accomplish. These tools are available at retailers nationwide and include hand-held back massagers, chair massage tools, foot and hand "roller" massagers, and multipurpose massagers. Maximize the benefits of your wooden massager with a few simple steps.

Instructions:

  • Warm up your muscles or have the person you are massaging warm up with a bath, sauna or shower.
  • Lie down or have your partner lie down or sit in a comfortable position, depending on the area you will be massaging. Become aware of your breath or have your partner focus on his breathing, listening to it rise and fall. Focus on where you feel tension or have your partner tell you where the tension is in the body. Playing soft music can also help encourage relaxation.
  • Lay the massager on the part of the body it is designed for and begin with light strokes (push the tool onto the skin and move it across the length of the muscle). Gradually move to heavier strokes until you reach a comfortable level. Always move in a slow, gentle and rhythmic motion, with one stroke flowing smoothly into the next. Use a small amount of massage oil, if desired, to facilitate movement over the skin.
  • Lie down on top of a larger tool--such as a solid wooden back roller-- when using one on yourself; center it under your back. Your body weight helps provide pressure for the roller. Move the body up and down slowly. As the wooden tool rolls, it applies pressure to the paraspinal areas and releases muscle tension.
  • Sit with a wooden tool designed for use in a chair--usually a type of roller--under your legs and gently roll it back and forth to release tension from the thighs and calves. Alternatively, sit with your back against the tool and slowly move up and down to work through the muscles in your back.
  • After a suitable time period, conclude the massage. The time spent using the wooden massager will depend on the individual. Drink plenty of water at the conclusion of the massage since toxins are released from soft tissues as a result of the massage; water will help remove the toxins from the body.

How to Do Foot Massage on Your Own Feet?

A foot massage after a long day of work would be like heaven, you think. What? Nobody's willing and ready to massage your poor, deserving, tired, achy feet? Then do it yourself. Find directions below.

  • Gather your materials. Put everything next to a comfortable seat, where you can reach it all. Take off your shoes. Get your washcloth wet with hot water. Wring out the cloth. Put a little soap on it. Then, sit in the comfortable chair.
  • Wash your feet with the warm washcloth and soap. As you do so, enjoy the warmth and rub your feet as you go. You are being your own heated foot massager. When finished, rinse with the second warm washcloth. Dry gently and thoroughly with one of your towels.
  • Put the golf ball on the floor, under the ball of one of your feet. Move your foot over the golf ball, rolling it up and back for half a minute.
  • Then, roll the ball around in circles under your foot for another 30 seconds. Adjust the pressure and direction of the golf ball for areas of your feet that feel particularly achy. Repeat on the other foot.
  • Apply foot lotion to your feet. Put lotion on both hands, and rub them together a bit. Then, grab your foot, with your thumbs grasping the sole. Firmly massage the sole of your foot with your thumbs as you rub on the foot lotion. Grab each toe, and rub the pad of each. Last, run your hands up and down your foot, with your fingers rubbing the top of the foot. Repeat for the other side.
  • Wrap your feet in the second towel. Close your eyes, relax, and smile as you let the foot lotion soak in for a few minutes. Then slide on your comfortable slippers. There. Doesn't that feel better?
