How to Use Macro Ring Flash:

Using a macro ring flash opens many doors for creatively capturing close detailed shots in nature and still life subject matter. A macro lens allows the photographer to place the lens in close proximity to the subject, at distances measured in inches rather than the standard lens distance, measured in feet. Using a macro flash ring while not attached to the lens is another creative manner for achieving a distinct lighting effect with the flash ring.
- Attach the macro ring flash onto the end of your camera lens. This will vary, based on the type of flash and lens, but most macro ring flashes will screw onto the end of the lens and use a tab or connection point to remain securely fastened to the lens. Using a macro lens will also help achieve the desired outcome as the macro lens will allow you to place the camera and the flash very close to the subject allowing a great deal of detail to be captured by the camera.
- Connect the remote unit attached to the flash ring to the camera's hot shoe, located at the very top of the camera. The remote unit will connect the flash to the camera and will allow you to control the flash intensity and output settings. Be sure the connection is secured properly because the camera and the flash will not communicate properly and will not fire at the right time or with the proper intensity that matches the camera's aperture and shutter settings to expose the image properly.
- Take several test images and be sure the ring flash is casting an even, shadowless light around your subject. If you notice hot spots, or bright sections of light on parts of the object, adjust the flash settings to reduce the power of the light source and adjust the distance of the flash from the object.
