How to Clean a Notebook Keyboard?
- People use notebook computers in all sorts of settings, so it's no wonder that over time the keyboard components start to get sticky and gunked up with food and other debris. Learning how to properly clean the keyboard will help prolong the life of your laptop and prevent you from having to make costly repairs in the future
- Take the keys off. Using a screwdriver or pair of tweezers, gently pry each key off the keyboard. It shouldn't take much force to do this. Some keys may have a wire attached to them, so use extreme caution when removing them
- Put in a little elbow grease. This next step is tedious but very important. Get the tip of a cotton swab slightly damp with rubbing alcohol and clean the keyboard thoroughly around every key slot. Avoid the rubber pads and wire connections and focus on the plastic components that may be covered in soda or other substances
- Collect all the keys that you popped off in Step 1 and place them in a kitchen strainer. Spray them with a common household cleaner and let them stand for a few minutes. Then rinse them thoroughly and lay them out on a paper towel until they're completely dry
- Lubricate the keys. Using an approved lubricant, turn each key upside down and coat the underside of each. While you let all the keys dry, you can apply a coat of lubricant to the keyboard if you desire, being careful not to get any into the notebook itself
- Reassemble the keyboard. Using your key map, pop the keys back into place and test the keyboard to make sure your notebook is working properly again
