Capacitive Touch Screen

A capacitive touchscreen panel consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor (mostly indium tin oxide). As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the body's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. Unlike its resistive counterpart, capacitive touch screens must be touched by a human finger or some sort of conductive device being held by a human hand. The figure on the right from Electronic Design shows how does capacitive screens work. Examples of devices with capacitive touchscreens are the iPhone and the T-Mobile G1.

Advantages:
- Higher clarity display (up to 90% optical transparency)
- Supports multi-touch
- High touch resolution
- High sensitivity
Disadvantages:
- Needs a human finger to register input. It is not possible to use this screen wearing gloves
- Cannot be used in all weather scenarios

On touchscreen displays, multi-touch refers to the ability to simultaneously register three or more distinct positions of input touches. It is often used to describe other, more limited implementations, like Gesture-Enhanced Single-Touch, -Touch or real Multi-Touch.
- The most popular form are mobile devices (iPhone, iPod Touch), touchtables (Microsoft Surface) and walls. Both touchtables and touch walls project an image through acrylic or glass, and then back-light the image with LEDs. When a finger or an object touches the surface, causing the light to scatter, the reflection is caught with sensors or cameras that send the data to software which dictates response to the touch, depending on the type of reflection measured. Touch surfaces can also be made pressure-sensitive by the addition of a pressure-sensitive coating that flexes differently depending on how firmly it is pressed, altering the reflection
- Handheld technologies use a panel that carries an electrical charge. When a finger touches the screen, the touch disrupts the panel's electrical field. The disruption is registered and sent to the software, which then initiates a response to the gesture
- In the past few years, several companies have released products that use multi-touch. In an attempt to make the expensive technology more accessible, hobbyists have also published methods of constructing DIY touchscreens
How to Mount a Tablet PC:
As the price of touch-enabled tablet PCs comes down, more people are finding a variety of uses for them around the home or at work. Because of their small form factor and touch interface, tablets are perfect for mounting in locations where one might need a computer within arm's reach, such as in the kitchen, for viewing recipes and schedules, or in the living room for entertainment purposes. Choosing a wall mount for these situations is an important task, because without the right type, the tablet PC can't live up to its full potential
Choosing A Mount Type
- Decide what purpose the tablet PC will primarily be used for. Will it remain stationary or should it be able to be mounted in multiple locations? Can it sit flush against the wall or should it be able to be tilted and pulled closer? If you will primarily use your mounted tablet in one location and want to be able to adjust its viewing position, you'll likely need an ergonomic mount. To be able to move your tablet around easily and mount it in multiple locations or just use it unmounted, you'll need something along the lines of the PadTab
- Measure the tablet's length, width and height
- Determine your tablet's weight by searching online
Ergonomic Mounts
- Shop around for a wall-mount arm that can attach to a tablet with the dimensions yours has
- Attach the mounting arm to your wall in the location where you've decided you'll need your tablet the most. Manufacturer instructions for how to do this vary from brand to brand
- Attach the tablet to the arm's holder, again according to the instructions that came with your tablet arm
Tab-Based Mounts
- Find the center of the back of your tablet using a ruler
- Affix the PadTab mount to the center of the back of your tablet PC using the kit's instructions
- Place wall tab mounts from the kit in locations around your house where you'd like to be able to mount your tablet
- Slide one of the tabs on the back of your tablet into the wall tab mount, thus mounting your tablet in one of four possible orientations
