How to Troubleshoot a Phone Splitter:
- Connect a telephone that you're certain is in good working order directly to the wall jack with a wire that you're certain is also working. If you pick up the handset and hear a dial tone, you'll confirm that the phone splitter itself is causing your problem and there's nothing wrong with the wall jack itself
- Unplug the phone wire and plug the phone splitter into the wall jack. Plug the telephone wire into one of the phone splitter jacks, and pick up the handset. If you hear a dial tone without interference, you're confirmed that the jack you're plugged into is working correctly
- Test the other jack on the phone splitter by plugging your telephone into that side and checking for a dial tone there. If you hear the dial tone clearly, you'll know this side is working as is should
- If you have two working telephones, you should next plug one into each side of the phone splitter, and see if you can hear dial tones in both telephones simultaneously. If you do, you've confirmed that any connection or functional problems you're having aren't the fault of the phone splitter
- Finally, plug the two items that will share the phone splitter into their respective jacks, and test each one separately. Since you've already confirmed that each side of the phone splitter is working correctly using a telephone, any malfunction at this step is the result of the appliance you're using and not the fault of the phone splitter itself
