    What is a Microphone?

Morpin M1 Multimedia Wired Microphone for PC Laptop Notebook

    • A microphone (colloquially called a mic or mike; both pronounced /ˈmaɪk/[1]) is an acoustic-to-electric transducer or sensor that converts sound into an electrical signal. In 1876, Emile Berliner invented the first microphone used as a telephone voice transmitter. Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, tape recorders, karaoke systems, hearing aids, motion picture production, live and recorded audio engineering, FRS radios, megaphones, in radio and television broadcasting and in computers for recording voice, speech recognition, VoIP, and for non-acoustic purposes such as ultrasonic checking or knock sensors
    • Most microphones today use electromagnetic induction (dynamic microphone), capacitance change (condenser microphone), piezoelectric generation, or light modulation to produce an electrical voltage signal from mechanical vibration

    Varieties:

    • The sensitive transducer element of a microphone is called its element or capsule. A complete microphone also includes a housing, some means of bringing the signal from the element to other equipment, and often an electronic circuit to adapt the output of the capsule to the equipment being driven. Microphones are referred to by their transducer principle, such as condenser, dynamic, etc., and by their directional characteristics. Sometimes other characteristics such as diaphragm size, intended use or orientation of the principal sound input to the principal axis (end- or side-address) of the microphone are used to describe the microphone

    Condenser Microphone:

    • AKG C451B small-diaphragm condenser microphone
    • Inside the Oktava 319 condenser microphone

    Electret Condenser Microphone:

    • An electret microphone is a relatively new type of capacitor microphone invented at Bell laboratories in 1962 by Gerhard Sessler and Jim West.[3] The externally applied charge described above under condenser microphones is replaced by a permanent charge in an electret material. An electret is a ferroelectric material that has been permanently electrically charged or polarized. The name comes from electrostatic and magnet; a static charge is embedded in an electret by alignment of the static charges in the material, much the way a magnet is made by aligning the magnetic domains in a piece of iron
    • Dynamic Microphone: Patti Smith singing into a SM58 (dynamic cardioid type) microphone
    • Ribbon Microphone: Edmund Lowe using a ribbon microphone

    Others:

    • Piezoelectric microphone
    • Fiber optic microphone
    • Laser microphone
    • Liquid microphone
    • MEMS microphone
    • Speakers as microphones

Types of Microphones You Can Connect to Your PC:

    • Computer microphones come in various types and can be used to record and reproduce sounds such as voices. The quality of microphone varies from type to type, so it is important to know what kinds are available and how they work. Selecting the proper computer microphone requires looking at the frequency response as well as making sure it is unidirectional and not omni-directional
    • Desktop Models: Desktop microphones can be purchased for simple tasks like Internet chat or using a webcam for videoconferencing. They are, however, not the best choice for for creating good quality audio, especially when attempting to record audio. Desktop microphones are primarily omni-directional, which means that they pick up sound from all directions. These types of microphones are also problematic when it comes to recording decent audio, because you need to be very close to the microphone in order to minimize any additional noise in the area

    • Analog Headset: An analog headset is a good option, because the microphone is attached to the headset, which is then wired to a 3.5 millimeter plug. The plug is then inserted into the computer's on-board audio input or the audio input on a sound card. Since a headset model is designed to be worn, it does not take up any space on the desk or work area. These types of microphones are normally unidirectional, so background noise is not as much of an issue
    • USB Headset: A USB headset is similar to an analog headset, except that it is attached to the computer via USB cable. The USB cable is plugged into an available USB port on the computer, and this type of microphone does not require any additional software to be installed. You can, however, install the software that came with the microphone, which may include a better software driver for the system. A USB microphone uses digital conversion to convert the voice input to digital before it enters the computer
    • Freestanding Models: Freestanding microphones can come in analog as well as USB versions. This type of microphone is better suited for professional-style voice recording, which can include podcasts or video voice-overs. The benefits of a freestanding microphone include giving the speaker the ability to vary the distance from the microphone. This will result in a better quality recording with less popping sounds
    • Selection: Selecting the type of microphone to use is up to each user and what they intend to do. Most people can get by with an analog headset, while others prefer a freestanding model. It is best to research each type first before making a purchase. Each type of microphone has its own specifications, and some are of better quality than others
