How to Make Shorts for Women:
Shorts can be both comfortable and fashionable in any style or color.
Shorts come in a wide array of styles, from distressed jean cutoffs to golf shorts, and are a staple in the warm summer months. While they often sell for top-dollar in clothing stores, it is not necessary to spend tons of money in order to achieve this comfortable fashion. Make your own shorts at home quickly and inexpensively to replicate this simple style.- Instructions
- Select any old pair of jeans or pants that you no longer wear out of your closet. If you have none, head to your local thrift shop and purchase a pair that you like the look of.
- Cut off the length of the pants 1 inch above the knee to remove excess fabric.
- Measure the fabric from the center of the inside seam down the inside of the leg. For shorter shorts, mark a small dash with a fabric pen 2 to 3 inches from the inside center where the legs join. For longer shorts, mark a dash 5 to 6 inches away.
- Use a ruler to measure a straight line from the inside marking to the outside of each pant leg. Where the ruler meets the outside of the leg, measure up 1/2 inch and draw a dash with a fabric pen. Repeat for the other leg.
- Use scissors to cut across the pant legs from the inner dash to the outer dash.
- Scuff the edges of the cut pants with the sharp edges of the scissors to get a jean cutoff look. Wash the pants a few times to further distress the edges.
- Fold the bottoms of the shorts to create a seamed look. Take 1/2 inch of the bottom of the shorts fabric and fold it under to the inside of the shorts. Sew the tucked-under seams around the leg openings to hem the shorts.
