How to Make a Wood Sculpture:
- Visualize your idea. Whether it is a small sculpture, a scrap wood creation or a richly carved statue, beginners are advised to start with smaller sculptures with few details. Use your imagination and assess your sculpting skill (beginner, intermediate, expert)
- Chose a wood type depending on your skill and experience level. If you are a beginner, use soft wood such as aspen, basswood or butternut. The first two are white, while the latter is brown. You may buy the wood of your choice at craft store. The branch mustn't be thin; allow for cracking, grain problems and sandpapering
- Shape the wood with a sharp wood-carving knife. Avoid using kitchen knives. Pay particular care to the grains. They run vertically, so use them for your purpose rather than trying to defy them. For example, if you're making a tree sculpture, use the grains to simulate bark
- Use a gouge for fine details. When choosing a proper gouge, keep in mind the original idea. Bent gouges are used for deep hollows. (A chisel may be used as well). V-shaped ones are used for crisp edges and sensitive lines. Flat gouges are used for flat surfaces
- Use a sheet of sandpaper to soften the edges. The best choice is garnet sandpaper, which is fitting for both soft and hard wood
- Use a fine brush to paint your sculpture (optional). If you're a beginner, use acrylic paints. They won't damage any type of wood. Use your imagination when choosing the color
- Apply varnish to the sculpture (optional). Use a good brush and a water-based varnish. It won't damage the paint (if applied)
