How to Make Matches Waterproof

- Burn the wax candle, and allow wax to pool around the flame.
- Take kitchen matches, one by one, and dip the sulphur dipped end, in the pool of melted wax.
- Set each wax-dipped match aside on a plate to allow the wax to set hard.
- When the wax has set hard, store your waterproof matches in a plastic zipper bag in a cool, dry place ready for use in any emergency. Strike as you would, a normal match.
How Does a Match Work?
- Phosphorous
While there are many varieties of matches, nearly all operate on the same basic principle. A match head is made using portions of the element phosphorus, a highly combustible material that will catch fire from the heat caused by the friction of striking the match. - Binders and Other Chemicals
A match head is not made of pure phosphorus. A binder like gelatin is used to hold the phosphorus in place. Match heads also contain chemicals and materials to assist the friction created in the striking process, such as potassium chlorate and powdered glass. The composition of these materials has evolved considerably since the invention of the match, as early formulas were often unreliable, toxic and dangerous. - Safety Matches vs. Strike Anywhere
The two most common matches available today are "safety" matches and "strike anywhere" matches. Safety matches require contact with a special striking surface in order to light because the phosphorous is contained in the striking strip. The tip of the match contains mostly potassium chlorate, which serves as an accelerant. Modern "strike anywhere" matches are the most recent development in matches. These matches use phosphorous in the form of phosphorus sesquisulfide (earlier matches used white phosphorus, which was later found to be toxic.) - Matchsticks
Once the phosphorous in the match head has been ignited, the matchstick begins to burn. While the paper board or wood of the stick is naturally combustible, it is treated with a more flammable substance such as paraffin (candle wax). This allows the match to burn easier and longer.

12-16-2010- Other Thoughts: Received these waterproof matches in a couple of days. Took a package apart from the brick to test them out, better now than at a time of emergency. I dipped 3 of the matches in water and all 3 lit. great product at a great dinodirect price.

11-03-2010- Other Thoughts: We purchased 250 of these matchboxes to use for our wedding. It wasn't easy finding a place that sells plain white matchboxes that aren't meant to be personalized or that aren't sold in bulk (2,500+). They shipped quickly and were packaged nicely. The boxes are constructed well and the matches seem sturdy and strike easily.

01-20-2011- Other Thoughts: These matches work great and come in waterproof containers! I love it! I put some in our 96-hour emergency packs and use some to light candles in our house. Everything was in perfect condition when it came.

01-15-2011- Other Thoughts: I recently took these camping. I rated it a 4 star because they didn't seem to hold up to wind well at all. I would have liked it to have burned a little longer to help start a fire. Definately a good buy though. Other than that these do fine.
